The Oldest-in-the-World Reed Clothing Discovered in ArmeniaA fragment of a reed skirt was discovered during archaeological excavations in the Areni-1 cave in southern Armenia.

The head of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography in Yerevan Pavel Avetisyan said that the artifact was found in 2010.

Although they had originally reported on their discovery, interest towards it grew further just recently.

“This women’s clothing dates at the 39th century BC. Up to now, we have found wonderfully preserved parts of the skirt. It is made of an astounding material with rhythmic color hues.

Additionally, other remnants of straw-woven materials were also wound. This is the first discovery of such kind in Armenia”, noted Avetisyan.

Today, this 5,900 years old skirt is considered the world’s oldest piece of reed clothing.
