The year 405 was that of a providential counter-attack, that of a touch of genius.
To ward off the menace resulting from weakening royal power, and to give the new religion a truly national basis, it was necessary to establish a distinct Armenian national character.
To that end, the Catholicos Sahak I gave his full support to a highly gifted monk, Mesrob Mashdots, to create a distinct Armenian alphabet.
Mesrob’s success led to the Armenian language replacing Greek and Syriac in church affairs and Persian in state administration.
