The only voice of protest from Islamic countries against the decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque came from Egypt.
The Mufti of Egypt, Shawki Allam, criticized the decision in a TV speech, saying that churches should be preserved and should not be turned into mosques, just as mosques should be preserved and should not be turned into churches.
He called the decision on Hagia Sophia unacceptable and said that this had never happened in Egypt. He defended the idea of maintaining the characteristics of various religions.
“We were also ordered to protect churches. Humanity must stand up for the protection of the world cultural heritage,” said Mufti Shawki Allam.
