Hunanyan Vardan – the second Lviv Armenian Catholic Archbishop

From the Armenian Archdiocesan Museum in Lviv – Hunanyan Vardan (Vartan, 1644-1715) – the second Lviv Armenian Catholic Archbishop-Metropolitan (1681-1715).

In 1690, thanks to his efforts, the Pope approved the charter of the Armenian Benedictine monastery at the Lviv Armenian Cathedral.

Hunanyan Vardan actively carried out organizational and liturgical reforms in the Catholic spirit, wrote a new pontifical, began to regularly hold provincial synods of the Armenian Catholic Church in Ukraine, introduced mandatory celibacy for all the clergy.

At the end of the 17th century, he built the palace of the archbishops in the eastern courtyard of the Lviv Armenian Cathedral (which still exists). Buried in the cathedral.
