On May 16, 1919, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Armenia decided to establish a university in Yerevan. The last university in Armenia, the Tatev University, had been shut down back in the 15th century as a result of violent actions by foreign invaders.
After a long break lasting five centuries, the leaders of the Armenian people, who had been subjected to genocide and were suffocating from hunger and epidemics, and the founders of the First Republic of Armenia were so wise that, not waiting for the passing of a year from the foundation of the First Republic, they decided to establish a university.
Thus, after a break of five hundred years, the university tradition was reestablished on Armenian soil.
Unfortunately, this event, which has exceptional national historical significance, wasn’t given the deserved attention by the current Armenian leadership despite the fact the President of Armenia, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Parliament, as well as many officials have all studied at the State University of Armenia.
