Silver artifact, 8th century BCE Kingdom of Ararat. British museum

Kingdom of Ararat (Urartu)

The Kingdom of Ararat, also known as Urartu, was a prehistoric Iron Age kingdom situated in the Armenian Highlands of modern-day Armenia, eastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. It existed from around the 9th century BCE to the early 6th century BCE.

Design and Symbolism

The artifact showcases an animal, possibly a lion or a large feline, alongside what appears to be a staff or a rod with a creature (possibly a bird) on top. Such iconography was common in ancient Near Eastern art, with animals and symbols often representing deities, power, or natural forces. The presence of such symbols could hint at the artifact’s religious or royal significance.

British Museum Collection

The British Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts from various civilizations throughout history, including numerous pieces from the Kingdom of Ararat. This particular artifact, due to its intricate design and historical significance, would be a valuable addition to the museum’s collection.
