US Unveils Disaster Relief Team for South Caucasus Following Karabakh Crisis

WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – In light of the recent crisis in the Karabakh region, the United States is set to introduce a Disaster Assistance Response Team to the South Caucasus this Thursday. This move comes after Azerbaijan reasserted control over Nagorno-Karabakh last week, triggering a need for coordinated humanitarian aid.

The Disaster Assistance Response Team, as first shared by Reuters, aims to thoroughly assess the prevailing conditions, pinpoint crucial areas for escalating aid, and collaborate with various partners to deliver immediate assistance. Samantha Power, the head of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is expected to detail these plans in an upcoming statement.

Expressing deep concern over the well-being of at-risk populations in Nagorno-Karabakh, Power underscores the importance of this initiative. Her recent visits to Armenia and Azerbaijan highlight Washington’s commitment to standing with Armenia and ensuring international accessibility to Karabakh, especially amid reports of numerous individuals injured, requiring evacuation, or lacking basic necessities.
