A Damascus Square Named In Memory Of Armenian Genocide Victims

In memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, the City Hall of Damascus on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide named one of the squares of the city “Square of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide”.

It should be noted that Syria became the first refuge for the Armenians expelled from Turkey during the Genocide. Syria is home to one of the largest Armenian Diaspora communities in the world.

On February 13, 2020, the Syrian Parliament passed a resolution recognizing the massacre and deportation of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide. Parliamentarians unanimously supported this resolution.

Between 1915 and 1923, over 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the Armenian Genocide. Many of the victims are buried in the territory of modern Syria. Near the city of Deir-ez-Zor, for example, there used to be a concentration camp where after the so-called “death marches” tens of thousands of deported Armenians have died.

Despite Turkish protests, more than 30 countries have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide.
