The ancient Hittite city of Carchemish (near present-day Aintap, Cilicia) was the capital of a Hittite district and an important administrative center in the northern areas of Syria. In June 2019, it was announced that the city would soon open its doors to visitors as an archaeological reserve.
Supervisor of archaeological excavations in Carchemish Dr. Nicholas Marzetti said that tourists visiting the region will be able to see the ruins of the palace and the temple, a street with Roman columns, statues, and city walls with engravings. Apart from that, visitors will have access to hiking trails, cafes, and places to relax.
