Tigran the Great – Interior and Foreign Policies

Tigran the Great (140 – 55 BC) was a King of Greater Armenia and its most successful ruler. Under his reign in 95 – 55 BC, Armenia reached its greatest historical extent.

Tigran was the grandson of Armenian King Artashes I and the son of Tigran I from the Artaxiad dynasty of Armenia. Tigran spent most of his youth as a prisoner of Mithridates II of Parthia who had defeated Armenia in 105 BC. After the death of his father in 95, Tigran “bought his freedom” by handing over “seventy valleys” in Atropatene to the Parthian Empire and acceded to the throne.
