Kharberd Fortress – Historical Armenia

Archaeological excavations at the site of the historic Kharberd fortress were launched in 2019. Among the goals of the excavations is the restoration of fortress structures throughout a 2800-square-meter area.

The history and culture of the Kharberd city-fortress date back to the middle of the Bronze Age. More precisely, the fortress was built in the era of the Kingdom of Van in the 7th century BC.

The leader of the archaeological team Doctor Aytakh notes: “This year, we have worked on the fortified area around the palace. To date, we have recovered about 120,000 items, most of which are ceramic. Fully preserved items have been transferred to museums.

In the end, we are working hard to ensure that the Kharberd Fortress included in the list of UNESCO reserves gets included in the primary list.”

Seals and other items dating to the times of the Armenian Kingdom of Van found in the fortress show that the fortress has been populated since the beginning of the 7th century BC.
