Taksim – Istanbul Square At An Armenian Cemetery

The most famous square in Istanbul, Taksim Square, is located on the site of the large Christian Armenian cemetery of Surb Hakob (St. Jacob) founded in the 16th century. The cemetery was so large that Armenian graves are still being discovered during the ongoing construction on Taksim Square.

Today, the square houses prestigious hotels along with numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, and eateries. The area often serves as a location for mass festivities both for the local population and tourists.

When you are in Istanbul and find yourself in Taksim Square, take your cross off and leave your conscience at home, for you will have to enjoy a fragrant kebab and walk over human bones.
