Raphael Patkanian, Armenian poets

Raphael Patkanian (also known as Kamar Katiba (1830- 1892) was one of the most popular Armenian poets. Patkanian was born in Nor Nakhichevan, Russia in 1830, his father and grandfather had been known for their poetic gifts.

While at the University of Moscow, he created a literary club for his Armenian students, and from the initials of their names formed his pen-name of Kamar Katiba.

Many of his poems were written during the Turco-Russian war when the Russian Armenians had high hopes for the deliverance of Turkish Armenia from the Ottoman yoke.

Patkanian died in 1892, after forty-two years of his continuous activity, as a teacher, author, and editor.

I present one of his patriotic poems. I like this more than all of them.

CRADLE SONG

Come, nightingale, leave our garden,

With your songs bring sleep to my son’s eyes.

But now he cries, don’t come, nightingale.,

My child doesn’t wish to be a deacon.

Come, monk- child, let hill and valley

Rock my son, he’s in need of sleep,

But now he cries, don’t come, o monk- child.

My child doesn’t wish to be a monk.

Turtledove, leave your young and your nest,

And with your cooing bring gentle sleep to my son.

But now he cries, don’t come, o turtledove,

My son doesn’t wish to be a mourner.

Magpie, silver- loving, thieving, clever one,

Bring sleep to my son with a story of profit,

But now he cries, don’t come, magpie,

My son doesn’t wish to be a dealer.

Come, brave falcon, quit your prey,

Maybe my son will favor your song…

When the falcon appeared my son fell still,

And slept to the sound of battle songs.
