Western Armenia is the western region of historical Armenia. After the loss of its sovereignty, Armenia was controlled by the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire since the 16th century, and Turkey since 1923. The local Armenian population was exterminated during the massacres of 1894 – 1896, as well as during the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
Western Armenia is sometimes referred to as Byzantine Armenia, Ottoman Armenia, Turkish Armenia, and Eastern Anatolia. Lesser Armenia existed to the west of Western Armenia.
