The Armenian Church of Surb Astvatsatsin in the Bulgarian town of Silistra is 400 years old.
It is believed that Surb Astvatsatsin is the oldest Armenian church in Bulgaria. During restoration works of the church carried out several years ago, stone tiles were found, indicating the date of its construction.
The church has a dome with unique frescoes. The frescoes, according to researchers, are a unique feature of Armenian churches.
The church occupies an area of about 180 square meters. Nearby is also a small priest’s house and a building where an Armenian school used to be located – now, it is a Community Center. There is also a memorial complex for the victims of the Armenian Genocide designed by Diran Apelian.
