Europe Must Return To Reality, Certain Actions Must Be Taken Against Turkey – Greek Defense Minister

The European Union will sooner or later face the need to impose sanctions against Turkey since Ankara is unlikely to abandon its behavior in the Mediterranean. According to Eadaily, this opinion was expressed by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panayotopoulos during a video seminar of the German Marshall Fund.

“I understand the concern of some European partners about sanctions against Turkey and Ankara’s response to them. Sooner or later, Europe will face the inevitability of imposing sanctions since Turkey is unlikely to abandon its provocative behavior. I wonder where the limits of all this are,” the minister said.

According to the minister, it is necessary to take into account not only Ankara’s “open threats” to Athens and Nicosia but also its behavior towards Paris and other Mediterranean players.

“Europe must return to reality, it is necessary to take certain actions against Turkey. Yes, I should consider the EU reconciliation process, but if this behavior of Turkey continues, I am afraid that there will be no alternative to imposing certain sanctions,” Panayotopoulos said.

At the same time, the minister expressed the opinion that since the Turkish economy is in a weak state, the sanctions will cause even more harm.
