Who Killed the Armenians?, an Egyptian Documentary About the Armenian Genocide

Who Killed the Armenians? Is a 2015 documentary film produced in Egypt and dedicated to the Armenian Genocide. The 70-minute film was shot in Armenia, Egypt, and Lebanon, and presents several documents from the countries visited which prove inhuman acts of the Ottoman Empire against the Armenians living on its territory before and during World War I.

The film features evidence based on archive materials and photos, interviews with survivors of the massacres, Armenian and non-Armenian public figures, activists, genocide scholars, lecturers, and clergymen. According to filmmaker Mohamed Hanafy and anchorwoman Myriam Zaki, who prepared the film, it took 10 months to produce the documentary and 600 hours to ready it.

The soundtrack of the film consists mainly of Armenian music, including Komitas’s (Armenian: Կոմիտաս; 26 September 1869 – 22 October 1935, born Soghomon Soghomonyan) Groung and Die Yaman.

In 2016, the documentary was featured at the Socially Relevant Film Festival in New-York City. Myriam Zaki was awarded the Vanya Exerjian: Empowering Women and Girls Award, which is established in memory of Founding Artistic Director Nora Armani’s cousin and uncle, victims of a hate crime. Mohamed Hanafy was awarded the SR Film Festival’s Audience Award.

Who Killed the Armenians? Is the first film that presents the Armenian Genocide to the Arab audience.
