A selection of photographs from the collection of the late photographer Ara Güler will be put up for auction on July 12 in Istanbul. 46 images will be put up for auction, including portraits of famous figures, as well as photographs taken in various cities of Turkey.
The Turkish photographer of Armenian descent made iconic photographs of such world celebrities as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren.
Ara Güler was born in Istanbul in 1928. He worked as a photojournalist in the Middle East in the “Time Life” magazine in 1956, in “Paris Match” in 1958, and also in the German magazine “Stern”. His images on art and art history were published by “Time Life”, “Horizon”, “Newsweek”, and “Skira Publishing”.
In 2002, Güler was awarded France’s Legion of Honor. In 2009, he received La Médaille de la Ville de Paris from the municipality of Paris.
Güler passed away on October 17, 2018, at the age of 90.
