The Battle of Sarikamish: Valor and Betrayal

In the frostbitten realms of the Sarikamish front during World War I, Armenian soldiers displayed extraordinary valor, saving Ottoman Military Minister Enver Pasha from capture by Russian forces. This act of bravery was acknowledged by Enver himself, who expressed his gratitude in a letter to Archbishop Zaven Der-Yeghiayan, the Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul. Yet, the tides of war and politics would soon turn this gesture of appreciation into a harbinger of betrayal.

The Ottoman defeat at Sarikamish laid the groundwork for a campaign of slander against the Armenian soldiers, falsely accusing them of treachery. On February 12, 1915, Enver Pasha issued a dire edict that would strip these soldiers of their dignity and defense. The order to disarm the Armenians was a calculated move, forcing them into “amel tabouri” (labor battalions) and “hamal tabouri” (porter battalions), effectively transforming soldiers into laborers.

The isolation and disarmament of Armenian officers followed, a systematic effort to remove any semblance of authority and autonomy they possessed within the Ottoman Army. This sequence of events culminated in a chilling directive from Enver Pasha: the complete elimination of all Armenian soldiers in the Ottoman Army.

The repercussions of these actions were profound, setting in motion a tragic chain of events that would lead to one of the darkest chapters in human history—the Armenian Genocide. The valor of the Armenian soldiers on the battlefield, overshadowed by the treachery of those they served, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of war and the catastrophic consequences of discrimination and hatred.

As we reflect upon these historical events, it is crucial to recognize the courage of the Armenian soldiers and the injustices they endured. Their story is a testament to the enduring spirit of a people who, despite facing unimaginable adversity, continue to seek recognition and justice. The Battle of Sarikamish is not just a tale of war; it is a narrative that compels us to confront the past and advocate for a future where such atrocities are never repeated.
