Castles of Eğil near Diyarbakir, Historical Armenia

A lot of local caves in this region were already inhabited between 20,000 – 15,000 BC.

Throughout its long history, Eğil has been the starting point for different civilizations – the Kingdom of Van (Urartu), Assyrians, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.

Egil Castle was built during the period of the Assyrian Empire in 5000 BC. overlooking the Tigris River.

The four tunnels that can still be seen today were constructed by carving the rocks to reach safe places in an emergency.

The tombs of Assyrian kings have also survived the test of ages.
