The stepped Cross motif was first seen in the Armenian Highland

The stepped cross is an ancient pagan motif possibly first seen in the Armenian Highland. Linen fragments with the motif were found in Areni 1 cave from 4000 BC.

Later, different religions adopted it from the Zoroastrians which can be seen in the Temple of Anahita to the Christians as can be seen in Armenian medieval art. This motif has been used commonly on Armenian Antique rugs for centuries.
