Bear Cave, Areni, Armenia

Bear Cave, Areni, ArmeniaIn approximately 7 km from Areni, the road to Mozrov can lead you to the longest and deepest cave in Armenia Arjeri (Bear Cave), which was accidentally discovered by a local hunter in the 1940s.

At the bottom of a 300-meter well, remains of an ancient bear have been found, hence its name. The cave has a hydrothermal origin and dimensions of 3700 / -130.

Falling stratums of limestone have created this branched cave system. The walls and vaults of the cave are covered with a 10-cm layer of calcite crystals, which are coated in carbonate incrustation.

In the same area, there are other huge caves in conglomerates: Magela (1577 m), Vayk (525 m), and Aytseri mine (-125 m).
