Colonel Arsen Shahmazyan was the governor of Syunik in 1919.
On November 3, 1919, it was Shahmazyan who stopped the attempt of joint control over Syunik by Azerbaijani and Kurdish military groups and two Turkish platoons. The area was successfully defended – after that, Garegin Nzhdeh came to assist Shahmazyan.
After the Soviet occupation of Armenia, the Bolsheviks arrested Arsen Shahmazyan and exiled him to Siberia, where he would disappear…
